Why in the news?

Recently the Bureau of Indian Standards has included 31 Indian Standards related to AYUSH herbs, products.

Important point

• The Bureau of Indian Standards has set Indian Standards for testing the quality and purity of AYUSH herbs.
• In its new initiative, BIS has also started preparing international standards in collaboration with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
• ISO/TC-215 A working group (WG-10) on 'Traditional Medicine' in health informatics has been formed on the advice of BIS.
• 31 Indian standards covering various aspects of AYUSH, including 30 herbs and one product (stainless steel neti pot).
• These standards were recently made public through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of AYUSH.
• To emphasize its commitment towards AYUSH, BIS has set up a separate department to exclusively focus on matters relating to AYUSH.
• By taking this step towards standardization in the field of AYUSH, BIS aims to enhance the quality and credibility of AYUSH products and services.

Importance

• This initiative will increase the international trade of AYUSH and will also benefit the consumers taking medicines of Naturopathy including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, Unani.
• This effort will enhance international trade by ensuring quality of products and services, provide confidence to manufacturers and also benefit consumers by reducing costs, improving performance and safety.

Indian Standards Bureau

• It was established by the BIS Act, 1986 and came into effect in December 1986.
• The Bureau of Indian Standards is the national standards body of India under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India.
• BIS plays an important role in standardization, marking and quality certification activities of products.
• The headquarters of the Bureau of Indian Standards is in New Delhi. It has five regional offices located at Kolkata (East), Chennai (South), Mumbai (West), Chandigarh (North) and Delhi (Central).
• A new BIS Act, 2016 is in force from October 2017.
• This act establishes BIS as the national standards body of India.

हाल ही में भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो ने आयुष जड़ी-बूटियों, उत्पादों से संबंधित 31 भारतीय मानकों को शामिल किया है।

महत्वपूर्ण बिंदु

• भारतीय मानक ब्‍यूरो ने आयुष जड़ी-बूटियों की गुणवत्‍ता और शुद्धता को जांचने के लिए भारतीय मानक तय किए हैं।
• बीआईएस ने अपनी नई पहल में मानकीकरण के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगठन आईएसओ के सहयोग से अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मानक तैयार करने की भी शुरुआत की है।
•  बीआईएस की सलाह पर आईएसओ/टीसी-215 स्वास्थ्य सूचना विज्ञान में ‘पारंपरिक चिकित्सा’ पर एक कार्य समूह (डब्ल्यूजी-10) बनाया गया है।
• 31 भारतीय मानकों में आयुष के विभिन्न पहलुओं को शामिल किया गया है, जिसमें 30 जड़ी-बूटियाँ और एक उत्पाद (स्टेनलेस स्टील नेटी पॉट) शामिल हैं।
• इन मानकों को हाल ही में आयुष मंत्रालय द्वारा जारी राजपत्र अधिसूचना के माध्यम से सार्वजनिक किया गया था।
• आयुष के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता पर जोर देने के लिए, बीआईएस ने विशेष रूप से आयुष से संबंधित मामलों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने के लिए एक अलग विभाग की स्थापना की है।
• आयुष के क्षेत्र में मानकीकरण की दिशा में यह कदम उठाते हुए बीआईएस का उद्देश्य आयुष उत्पादों और सेवाओं की गुणवत्ता और विश्वसनीयता को बढ़ाना है।

महत्व

• इस पहल से आयुष का अंतर्राष्‍ट्रीय स्‍तर पर व्‍यापार बढ़ेगा और आयुर्वेद, होम्‍योपैथी, सिद्धा, यूनानी सहित नेचुरोपैथी की दवाएं लेने वाले उपभोक्‍ताओं को भी लाभ होगा।
• यह प्रयास उत्पादों और सेवाओं की गुणवत्ता सुनिश्चित करके, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय व्यापार को बढ़ाएगा, निर्माताओं को विश्वास प्रदान करेगा और लागत कम कर, प्रदर्शन और सुरक्षा में सुधार कर उपभोक्ताओं को भी लाभ पहुंचाएगा।

भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो

• यह BIS अधिनियम, 1986 द्वारा स्थापित किया गया था और दिसंबर 1986 में प्रभाव में आया।
• भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो, उपभोक्ता मामलों के विभाग, उपभोक्ता मामले, खाद्य और सार्वजनिक वितरण मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार के तहत भारत का राष्ट्रीय मानक निकाय है।
• बीआईएस उत्पादों के मानकीकरण, अंकन और गुणवत्ता प्रमाणन गतिविधियों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
• भारतीय मानक ब्‍यूरो का मुख्‍यालय नई दिल्‍ली में है। इसके पांच क्षेत्रीय कार्यालय कोलकाता, (पूर्वी), चेन्नई (दक्षिण), मुंबई (पश्चिम), चंडीगढ़ (उत्तर) और दिल्ली (मध्‍य) में स्थित है।
• अक्तूबर 2017 से एक नया BIS अधिनियम, 2016 लागू है।
• यह अधिनियम BIS को भारत के राष्ट्रीय मानक निकाय के रूप में स्थापित करता है।
