Why in the news?
The 69th National Film Awards 2023 were presented by President Draupadi Murmu on 17 October 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
important point:
- The winners of the 69th National Film Awards were announced at the National Media Center in New Delhi.
- Under the National Film Awards 2023, the awards were presented by the President of India Draupadi Murmu to honor the best films of 2021 in Indian cinema.
- Feature and non-feature films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, were eligible for the award.
- A national selection committee appointed by the government selects the winners.
About 69th National Film Awards 2023:
- The Best Actor award went to Allu Arjun for his performance in the Telugu film Pushpa: The Rise.
- The Best Actress award went to Alia Bhatt for her performance in the Hindi film Gangubai Kathiyawadi and Kriti Sanon for Mimi.
- Best Feature Film Award ARE. Awarded to the Hindi film Rocketry: The Nambi Effect directed by Madhavan.
- The Best Director award went to Madhavan for his work in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.
- The Directorate of Film Festivals of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting oversees the organization of the National Film Awards.
- The responsibility of managing these awards was transferred to the Directorate of Film Festivals in 1973.

History of National Film Awards:
- The National Film Awards were started in 1954 under the name “State Awards”.
- At that time, only the best films from different regional languages were nominated and awarded.
- In 1967 it began giving awards to actors and technicians working in films.
- The first actor to win the Best Actress award was Nargis for her performance in Raat Aur Day, while Uttam Kumar won the Best Actor award for Antony Firangi and Chiriyakhana.
- For the first six years, there was a practice of giving the regional best award only to the national best film.
- Till now, the most awarded film in the history of the National Film Awards has been Lagaan, which received eight honors in 2002.
- Separate awards for artists and technicians were introduced in 1968 for films of 1967.
- Under the National Film Awards, awards are given in three categories: Feature, Non-Feature and Best Writing in Cinema.
