ASIA’S LARGEST BIO CNG PLANT
IN NEWS
- The Indore Municipal Corporation produces 17,000 kilograms of Bio-CNG every day from Asia’s largest municipal solid waste-based facility.
- The plant was launched in 2022.
- It is part of Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan) initiative to turn waste into wealth.
ABOUT THE INITIATIVE GOBARDHAN
- The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation of Ministry of Jal Shakti is the coordinating department.
- Aim: converting biodegradable/ organic waste into valuable resources such as biogas, compressed biogas (CBG), and organic manure and to promote circular economy.
OBJECTIVES
- The objective of the scheme is to support villages to safely manage their cattle waste, agricultural waste and eventually all organic waste.
- The scheme supports communities converting their cattle and organic waste to wealth using decentralised systems.
- Through effective disposal of waste in rural regions, the scheme helps to curb vector-borne diseases.
- The conversion of organic waste especially cattle waste to biogas and fertiliser for use in rural areas.
- The scheme promotes rural entrepreneurship, employment and income-generation opportunities.
