HUMSAFAR POLICY

For Prelims: WHAT IS THE HUMSAFAR POLICY?, KEY FEATURES OF THE HUMSAFAR POLICY

Why in the news?

Recently, The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways launched the ‘Humsafar Policy’.

WHAT IS THE HUMSAFAR POLICY?

  • It is a comprehensive initiative designed to transform India's highway network by offering a range of essential services and facilities.
  • The key objective is to make road travel more comfortable, convenient, and inclusive, ensuring that facilities are available to meet the needs of travellers across all regions.

KEY FEATURES OF THE HUMSAFAR POLICY

Under the Humsafar Policy, several essential facilities will be introduced or upgraded across national highways:

1)Hygienic and well-maintained toilets will be installed at regular intervals to ensure travellers have access to proper sanitation.

2)Dedicated rooms for baby care, equipped with changing tables and other essentials, will be provided for families travelling with young children.

3)Accessibility will be a key focus, with wheelchair provisions made available for differently-abled travellers.

4)With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, the policy includes plans to install EV charging stations at strategic points along the highway network to encourage the use of eco-friendly transport.

5)Adequate parking facilities will be established at fuel stations and rest stops to ensure smooth traffic flow and provide convenience for travellers stopping for breaks.

6)More fuel stations will be made available along highways, ensuring that travellers have easy access to petrol, diesel, and other essential services.

7)The policy aims to set up restaurants and food courts at regular intervals along highways, offering travellers quality food and refreshments during their journeys.

8)Dormitories will be introduced at fuel stations to provide short-term accommodation for truck drivers, travellers, and those requiring a rest break during long-distance travel.

A BOOST FOR TRAVELLERS AND THE ECONOMY

The Humsafar Policy is designed to not only improve the travel experience but also boost local economies by creating new opportunities for businesses along the highways. Petrol pumps, restaurants, and rest stops will generate employment and provide services for both long-distance truck drivers and everyday travellers.

FOCUS ON SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE

One of the key goals of the Humsafar Policy is to improve the safety of highway users. By providing clean toilets, parking spaces, and rest areas, the policy ensures that drivers can take the necessary breaks, reducing fatigue and the risk of accidents. The inclusion of EV charging stations is also a step toward making highways more sustainable and future-ready as India transitions to electric vehicles.

ENHANCING NATIONAL HIGHWAY INFRASTRUCTURE

  • By implementing the Humsafar Policy, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways aims to modernize the national highway network and bring it up to international standards.
  • The introduction of such amenities along highways will make travel more comfortable for families, individual commuters, and long-haul drivers alike, contributing to a more efficient and traveller-friendly network across the country.
  • The launch of the Humsafar Policy marks a significant milestone in India's efforts to improve road infrastructure. By addressing the basic needs of travellers and providing key facilities like clean toilets, EV charging stations, and rest areas, it is an initiative that will enhance the safety, convenience, and overall experience of road users on national highways.
  • This policy reflects a forward-looking approach toward infrastructure development aimed at meeting the growing demands of modern-day travellers and promoting sustainable travel options across the country.
