Why in the  news?            

        Recently India TB Report 2024 has been released by the Union Health Ministry.

 

Important points:

  • The report released by the Union Health Ministry on March 27 said that the country has set a target to eliminate the disease by 2025.
  • Of all TB cases notified in 2023, about 32% of notifications came from the private health care sector, an increase of 17% from the previous year, according to the report.

 

About India TB Report-2024:

  • India has seen a 16% decline in new TB cases and an 18% decline in deaths since 2015.
  • The incidence rate in India has declined from 237 per lakh population in 2015 to 199 per lakh population in 2022, while the death rate has declined from 28 per lakh population in 2015 to 23 per lakh population in 2022.
  • According to the India TB Report 2024 released by the Union Health Ministry, the gap between the estimated number of tuberculosis (TB) and actual cases is narrowing.
  • The report said there were only 2.3 lakh missing cases in 2023, whereas the number was 3.2 lakh a year earlier.
  • This gap has been narrowing over the years, especially with the government's Ni-Kshaya portal tracking all TB patients.
  • According to the report, the majority of TB cases are still reported by government health centres, even as notifications by the private sector have increased.
  • Of the 25.5 lakh cases reported in 2023, about 33% or 8.4 lakh cases came from the private sector.
  • To compare, only 1.9 lakh cases were reported by the private sector in 2015, the year considered by the program as a baseline that is geared towards eradicating the disease.
  • The report shows that India reached its 2023 target of starting treatment in 95% of patients suffering from the infection.
  • It said 58% of those diagnosed were offered testing to check whether their infection was resistant to first-line drugs, up from 25% in 2015.
  • The report recommends drug sensitivity treatment to ensure that people who may have drug-resistant TB are able to receive treatment early on, rather than being treated with first-line therapy.
  • According to the data released in the report, where the overall notification of TB cases has improved by more than 50% on an annual basis in the last nine years.
  • Uttar Pradesh saw the highest jump in notifications (21% compared to last year). After this is Bihar (15%).
