New Cave-Dwelling Fish Species Discovered in Meghalaya

Context:

In a recent breakthrough in biodiversity research, scientists have discovered a new cave-dwelling fish species named Schistura dancilvai in Meghalaya’s Krem Mojim cave. This rare find, made in the limestone cave systems of the region, sheds light on India’s unique subterranean biodiversity and raises important ecological and conservation questions.

About the News:

  • New species named Schistura dancilvai found in Meghalaya.
  • Located inside Krem Mojim, a limestone cave system.
  • Fish belongs to Nemacheilidae (loach fish) family.
  • Identified as a Troglofile, not fully adapted to cave life.

Characteristics :

  • Found 60 metres below the surface, with low oxygen and 18°C temperature.
  • Maintains pigmentation, unlike most cave species.
  • Has functional eyesight, rare among cave-dwelling fishes.
  • Body colour is pale yellow-green, with visible pigments.
  • Can survive in both cave and surface (epigean) environments.
  • Displays partial cave adaptation, unique among loaches.

Conclusion:

The discovery of Schistura dancilvai in Meghalaya’s Krem Mojim cave highlights the hidden richness of India's underground ecosystems. It urges policymakers and researchers to reimagine conservation strategies by including fragile, lesser-known habitats that hold significant ecological importance.
