  • Popular modern Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma was remembered on his death anniversary (October 02).

ABOUT RAJA RAVI VARMA

  • He belonged to the family of Maharajas of Travancore in Kerala and was addressed as Raja.
  • He is popularly called the father of modern Indian art.
  • He had mastered the Western art of oil painting and realistic life study.
  • He had also painted themes from Indian mythology, depicting scenes from popular epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
  • His most famous works involve :
  • Damayanti Talking to a Swan
  • Shakuntala Looking for Dushyanta
  • Nair Lady Adorning Her Hair
  • Shantanu and Matsyagandha.
  • In 1904, the then Viceroy Lord Curzon, on behalf of the British Emperor, bestowed upon him, the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal.
  • Citation for this award mentioned the title 'Raja' for the first time against his name.
