PERSONALITY IN NEWS – RAJA RAVI VARMA (1848-1906)
IN NEWS – 
	- Popular modern Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma was remembered on his death anniversary (October 02).
 
ABOUT RAJA RAVI VARMA
	- He belonged to the family of Maharajas of Travancore in Kerala and was addressed as Raja.
 
	- He is popularly called the father of modern Indian art.
 
	- He had mastered the Western art of oil painting and realistic life study.
 
	- He had also painted themes from Indian mythology, depicting scenes from popular epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
 
	- His most famous works involve :
 
	- Damayanti Talking to a Swan
 
	- Shakuntala Looking for Dushyanta
 
	- Nair Lady Adorning Her Hair
 
	- Shantanu and Matsyagandha.
 
	- In 1904, the then Viceroy Lord Curzon, on behalf of the British Emperor, bestowed upon him, the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal.
 
	- Citation for this award mentioned the title 'Raja' for the first time against his name.
