Context

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare highlighted India’s ongoing interventions and policy initiatives to conserve soil health, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity, ensure long-term sustainability, and build climate resilience.

Need for Soil Health Conservation

  • Agricultural Sustainability: Agriculture accounts for nearly 59% of India's total geographical area, making soil health critical for crop yields, nutrient quality, and reducing reliance on synthetic inputs.
  • Livelihood Security: Supporting over 46% of the national workforce, healthy soil is directly tied to rural income stability, food security, and poverty alleviation.
  • Carbon Mitigation: Agricultural soils act as significant carbon sinks. However, intensive cultivation has dropped India's average Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) levels from 1% to 0.3% over the last seven decades.
  • Salinity & Erosion Control: Mismanaged irrigation and deficient drainage have accelerated soil salinity and waterlogging. Without active conservation, global estimates project up to 50% of arable land could be degraded by 2050.
  • Global Commitments: Soil restoration is vital for India to fulfill United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by 2030.

Key Government Initiatives & Achievements

1. Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme (2015)

  • Objective: Assesses soil quality across 12 crucial physical and chemical parameters to provide targeted, balanced fertilizer recommendations to farmers.
  • Impact: Over 25.89 crore Soil Health Cards distributed and more than 7.17 lakh field demonstrations organized.

2. National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) (2024)

  • Objective: Promotes chemical-free, nature-based farming techniques to enhance Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) through localized Bio-input Resource Centres providing organic formulations like Beejamrit and Jeevamrit.
  • Impact: Established 18,786 clusters spanning 8.80 lakh hectares, engaging over 18.19 lakh farmers.

3. Rainfed Area Development (RAD) (2014)

  • Objective: Component of the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) focusing on soil erosion mitigation via localized Integrated Farming System (IFS) models.
  • Impact: Expanded across 8.50 lakh hectares, benefiting over 14.35 lakh farmers.

4. National Mission for a Green India (GIM) (2014)

  • Objective: Operates under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) to enhance biomass, prevent topsoil erosion, and restore degraded ecosystems through afforestation.
  • Impact: Created a carbon sink equivalent to 2.29 billion tonnes of COтВВ between 2005 and 2021, aligning closely with India's 2030 goal (2.5–3 billion tonnes).

5. Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS): Agricultural Integration (2023)

  • Objective: Introduces market-based financial incentives for adoption of verified carbon-farming practices, converting agricultural soils into active carbon sinks while curtailing long-term greenhouse gas emissions.

6. Digital Agriculture Mission (2024)

  • AgriStack: Establishes digital infrastructure, including unique Farmer IDs, geo-referenced village boundary maps, and Crop Sown Registries.
  • Krishi Decision Support System (KDSS): Integrates satellite imagery, soil metrics, weather patterns, and hydrological data for precise geospatial planning.
  • Soil Profile Mapping: Develops detailed, location-specific soil profile maps to guide crop planning and micro-nutrient management.

7. Khet Bachao Abhiyan (2026)

  • Objective: Driving scientific soil stewardship through extensive ground-level awareness, capacity building, and farmer outreach programs.
  • Impact: Reached over 1.07 crore direct agricultural stakeholders and connected with approximately 4.5 crore citizens through physical and digital outreach.

Restoring and maintaining soil health is fundamental to India's climate adaptation strategy and food security goals. By integrating digital technology, sustainable farming practices, and direct farmer outreach, these initiatives provide a comprehensive framework to prevent land degradation while sustaining agricultural livelihoods.
