VINESH PHOGAT DISQUALIFIED FROM PARIS OLYMPICS 2024
- Phogat defeated Japan’s world champion Yui Susaki in the Semi Finals achieving Silver and making a historic place in the finals for the event – Women 50 kg wrestling in Paris Olympics 2024.
- Phogat got disqualified in finals as she weighs 50.1 kg.
- Appeal against the disqualification in Court of Arbitration of sports accepted.
- Mirabai Chanu lost medal by 1 kg.
- She lifted 199 kg ending up at 4th position after China (206 kg), Romania (205 kg) and Thailand (200 kg).
- Neeraj Chopra brings silver medal in Paris Olympics 2024 after Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem marks 92.7m achieving gold.
TOPS – Target Olympic Podium Scheme

- Flagship program launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in September 2014.
- Aim : To improve India’s performance at Olympics and Paralympics.
- The rules were modified to make an attempt to establish a technical support team for managing the TOPS athletes and to provide them comprehensive assistance.
- MYAS is responsible for appointment of TOPS members targeting the inclusion of experts from various fields including the High priority games and sports like – Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Shooting and Wrestling.
- Two categories are made – The core group ; The developed group
- The athletes are given pocket allowances of Rs 50,000 per month for the core group players and Rs 25,000 per month to the players of the development group.
- A dedicated body is thereafter made to assist the selected athletes called “Mission Olympic Cell”.
OUTCOMES –

- P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik as the players of TOPS grabbed medals in Rio Olympics 2016.
- 4 medals in Paralympics 2016 had been grabbed by the TOPS athletes.
- Out of the 70 athletes who won medals at the, 47 of them were supported under the TOP Scheme in the recent Commonwealth games.
Mission Olympics Cell

- A centred body with an objective to supplement facilities to the athletes under the TOP scheme.
- The Chairperson of MOC – Director General of Sports Authority of India.
NSDF – National Sports Development Fund
- Established in 1998 under Charitable Endowments Act, 1890
- Main objective – Encouraging sports and games in the country and provide financial assistance.
- NSDF plays a crucial role in maintenance of facilities under schemes like TOPS etc.
