WHY IN NEWS?

  1. On the occasion of 170th birth anniversary of the great social reformer from Kerala Shree Narayan Guru, celebrations all over the state filled people with the sense of gratitude.

ABOUT SHREE NARAYAN GURU

  1. He was born in Chempazhanthy (modern day Thiruvananthpuram) in a family of Ezhava
  2. He was a saint, a philosopher, a seer, a poet as well as a social reformer who conducted movements against the cruel caste system and its impact on the minds of people.
  3. He also advocated for social equality among all where he formulated the slogan – One case, One religion, One God for all human beings.
  4. He founded the famous Aravipuram Monument where he installed the idol of Shivan in a place named Aravipuram.
  5. One of the key features of this temple was – Since traditional norms restricted temple entry to the lower castes, this monument provided entry to all exhibiting the values of Narayan Guru. It is also considered as a symbol of resistance against social inequality, injustice and false treatment based on caste system.
  6. He has contributed greatly in the field of literature by writing famous texts like – Advaita Deepika, Atmavilasam, Daiva Dasakam, Brahmavidya Panchakam and so on.
  7. Under the direction of Shree Narayan Guru, Shree Narayan Dharma Pratipalana (SNDM) was founded by Dr. Palpu Padmnabhan who was a disciple of Guru ji.
